The Singaporean agency Animal & Veterinary Services (AVS) has granted Friends & Family permission to sell pet treats made from cultivated meat in the country. As a result, Friends & Family becomes the first company in Asia to receive the right to commercially offer such products.
According to CEO Joshua Errett, the launch is scheduled for the fall of 2025 and will feature two types of freeze-dried treats – one for cats and one for dogs. The products are made from cultivated meat sourced from the Kampung chicken breed, traditional to Malaysia and Indonesia.
Maurice Yeo, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted that Singapore will be the only place in the world where dog and cat owners can purchase treats made from cultivated meat. Friends & Family emphasizes that this technology enhances the protein composition in pets’ diets, increases essential nutrients content, including taurine, and improves the product digestibility.
The company plans to expand its presence in the region, with Thailand being one of the first new markets under consideration. China and the United States are also viewed as promising markets, where there has been significant growth in the pet population.
According to GlobalPETS, interest in alternative protein sources for pet food is growing globally. The UK and South Korea are actively increasing investments in cultivated meat research. Friends & Family has joined companies like Meatly in bringing products utilizing this technology to market, reinforcing the global trend towards sustainable and innovative pet nutrition.
