In the first quarter of 2026, Russia significantly increased dog and cat food supplies to Kazakhstan and became the largest exporter in this category. According to RIA Novosti, based on customs statistics, sales of pet food from Russia almost doubled compared with the same period in 2025.

Shipments from Russia reached $16 million, up from $8.7 million a year earlier. Kazakhstan remains one of the notable export destinations for pet food producers from Russia, while the increase in supplies indicates stronger positions for these companies in the neighboring market.

Other countries also increased pet food exports to Kazakhstan. Germany expanded shipments sevenfold to $1.4 million. France increased sales 2.3 times to $1.1 million, the same result recorded by Italy. Poland exported almost $930,000 worth of products, eight times more than a year earlier.

Despite stronger supplies from European companies, producers from Russia maintain a substantial lead. In the first quarter of 2026, dog and cat food exports from Russia to Kazakhstan were more than 11 times higher than Germany’s exports and around 17 times higher than Poland’s.

The broader export trend had already formed in 2025. According to Agroexport, the federal center operating under the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, pet food exports from Russia reached a record 106,000 tonnes and $256 million. Shipments in ruble terms increased by 23% year-on-year, while export revenue exceeded the previous peak of $227 million recorded in 2021.

Kazakhstan was already among the key destinations for pet food exports from Russia in 2025, with shipments totaling $48 million. Belarus remained the largest buyer, purchasing around 54,000 tonnes of pet food worth almost $176 million. Other major importers included Uzbekistan at $9.4 million, Kyrgyzstan at $6.4 million and Azerbaijan at $5.7 million.
