Pet owners in Russia are reassessing their spending on pet products

To mark World Pet Day, Rambler&Co, together with the SberSpasibo loyalty program, conducted a large-scale study of purchasing behavior among pet owners. The research was based on the results of an online survey carried out by Rambler&Co from 14 to 20 November 2025. A total of 83,000 respondents participated, 67% of whom own at least one pet — the analysis includes only their responses. In addition, spending tracked through the loyalty program database was reviewed.

According to the authors, pet owners have begun to approach spending more consciously. Product quality and assortment remain the key decision-making factors, cited by 68% of respondents. The second most influential factor is price, promotions, and the ability to pay part of the purchase with bonuses (29%). Delivery speed and customer reviews have minimal impact on decisions (2% and 1%, respectively).

Cats (53%) and dogs (33%) remain the dominant pet categories. Aquarium fish account for 6%, birds for 4%, rodents for 3%, and reptiles for 1%. The gap between the highest and lowest average purchase amounts for pet products across Russia’s largest cities reached $9,43. The highest pet products prices are recorded in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg, where the average purchase exceeds $12,99.

Most spending by pet owners is concentrated in several categories: 85% of the budget goes to pet food and treats. Grooming and hygiene account for around 6%, and veterinary services represent another 6%. Toys, accessories, boarding, and other products together make up about 2%, with the remaining expenditures totaling around 1%.

A separate part of the research focuses on the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in everyday pet care. Twelve percent of respondents are ready to rely on AI for product selection and price comparison; 11% for care and health recommendations; 8% for behavior analysis; 6% for selecting pet food and treats; and 5% for training support. Some owners are already using such tools: for generating photos (10%), obtaining advice (10%), behavior analysis (9%), and selecting pet food (8%). Despite the fact that 63% do not yet use AI services, interest in these technologies continues to grow.
