Russia denies ban on import of poultry additives for dry pet food

Recent reports in several media outlets and Telegram channels suggested the possible temporary disappearance of certain popular dog and cat food brands from the Russian market due to an alleged ban on the import of additives for pet food production, linked to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in European countries. These claims were denied both by pet food producers and by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor).

The agency press service stated:

“For dry pet food production, palatants (liquid flavor enhancers) and digests (additives improving protein digestibility) are used, which are both imported and produced domestically in Russia. The restrictions introduced in connection with foot-and-mouth disease have not affected poultry products supplies. Therefore, feed additives containing poultry-derived components imports continue.”

In addition, the agency emphasized that imports other animal-origin products remain permitted from 9 enterprises in European Union countries, including Spain, France, Belgium, and Italy, provided that they do not contain raw materials of German origin.
