Russian pet food exports break historical

According to the Agroexport Federal Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, pet food exports from Russia reached record volumes in 2025, totaling 106,000 tons in volume and $256 million in value. Supplies in rubles grew by 23% compared to the previous year. This result exceeded the 2021 record when export revenue reached $227 million.

Belarus remains the primary buyer of products from Russia. In 2025, the country purchased about 54,000 tons of pet food worth almost $176 million. According to Kirill Dmitriev, president of the National Pet Industry Association (NPIA), this leadership is driven by sanction restrictions on supplies from other countries, simplified customs procedures within the EAEU, and mutual recognition of veterinary certificates.

Other significant importers include Kazakhstan at $48 million, Uzbekistan at $9.4 million, Kyrgyzstan at $6.4 million, and Azerbaijan at $5.7 million. Additionally, Russia started pet food supplies to Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, and Bangladesh for the first time in 2025 and resumed exports to Hong Kong, which were interrupted in 2021.

Expert estimates of the future global pet food market differ in details, but agree on the direction—the industry expects long-term growth. The Pet Food Manufacturers Association (APK) follows a moderately optimistic scenario: estimating the current market volume at $130 billion, association experts predict it will almost double to $250 billion by 2035.

In turn, Ask Mona analysts focus on the medium term and qualitative industry changes in their report. According to their data, the global market will grow from $128 billion in 2024 to $185 billion by 2030. Experts identify premiumization (shifting demand toward higher quality products) and deep digital transformation of the pet business as key drivers.

According to NTech data, dog food sales grew by 9% in volume to 317,000 tons and 15% in value to 75.97 billion rubles. Cat food sales increased by 7% in volume to 1.39 million tons and 15% in value to 445.4 billion rubles. The share of imported pet food on the Russian pet market decreased from 15.7% (158,000 tons) in 2020 to 3.6% (53,000 tons) in 2025. This decline is attributed to Rosselkhoznadzor policy and the departure of several foreign brands since 2022.
