Russia’s Pet Market Reaches ₽590 Billion

Russia’s pet products market reached ₽590 billion (approximately $7.1 billion) in 2025, according to estimates by ZooInform. The U.S. dollar figures are calculated at the average 2025 exchange rate of ₽83.6 per $1. Depending on the global benchmark applied, Russia accounts for between 2.5% and 3.5% of the worldwide pet care market.

Estimates of the global market size for 2025 vary significantly. Future Market Insights values it at $243.5 billion, Precedence Research at $346.01 billion, Fortune Business Insights at $273.42 billion, and Euromonitor at $189.7 billion.

Following rapid expansion in 2022–2023, the Russian pet market has moved onto a more moderate growth path. Market value rose by 24.5% in 2022 and 31.2% in 2023, before slowing to 17.7% in 2024 and 15.8% in 2025.

According to ZooInform analysts, growth in 2025 was driven primarily by price dynamics, while expansion of the consumer base played only a limited role.

Pet food continues to dominate the structure of the market, accounting for 83% of total pet product sales in 2025. As a result, overall market performance remains closely tied to developments in the pet food segment.

Cat food remains the largest single category, reaching ₽347 billion (approximately $4 billion) in 2025. This represents a 16% year-on-year increase and nearly 59% of the total market. With close to 50 million cats living in Russian households, changes in this segment have a direct and substantial impact on overall market dynamics.

Dog food, serving a population of nearly 26 million dogs, also posted 16% growth in 2025, reaching ₽111.5 billion (around $1.3 billion).

Treats for cats and dogs were the fastest-growing nutrition segment, expanding by approximately 24% compared with 2024. Although treats account for only about 3.2% of the total market, they are often viewed as a barometer of consumer sentiment. Even amid more rational spending patterns, pet owners continue to purchase products associated with emotional bonding and rewards.

Pet food and treats together generated approximately 83.5% of the market’s incremental turnover in 2025, or about ₽67 billion (approximately $0.8 billion) in additional revenue. Cat food accounted for around 59.3% of total growth, or approximately ₽48 billion (around $0.6 billion). Dog food contributed 19.1%, or around ₽15 billion (approximately $0.2 billion). Treats added about 5%, or roughly ₽4 billion (around $0.05 billion).

The veterinary pharmaceuticals segment also continued to expand. According to RNC Pharma, sales of domestic and imported veterinary medicines exceeded ₽45 billion (approximately $0.5 billion) in the first 11 months of 2025, representing a 16.9% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

Among non-food categories, cat litter remains the largest, reaching ₽49.6 billion (approximately $0.6 billion) in 2025 and growing by about 11% year-on-year. The segment is expanding at a moderate pace, typical of a more mature product category.

From January to October 2025, 180 new pet product brands entered the Russian market, according to Nielsen data covering more than 180 retail chains nationwide, including traditional retail outlets and rural locations. Cat litter led in terms of new brand entries (52), followed by dog food (46) and cat food (40). The treats category recorded 38 new launches. Most of these new brands are expected to take part in the National Pet Business Rating.
