The global market for natural pet food is expected to double by 2033

Global demand for natural pet food continues to grow, and in the coming years this category is projected to become one of the most dynamic segments of pet nutrition. According to a report by Research Intelo, the value of the global natural pet food market reached USD 13.2 billion in 2024 and may increase to USD 27.2 billion by 2033.

Research Intelo links the expansion of the segment to ongoing pet humanization and the rising attention of pet owners to ingredient quality. Consumers expect pet food to meet the same standards as products for humans: no artificial additives or preservatives, maximally natural formulations, and transparent production standards. Demand is also increasing for products with limited ingredient lists, single-protein recipes, and dog and cat food designed for pets with food sensitivities. Companies note that owners are increasingly selecting diets based on skin condition, digestion, joint health, and immune support.

Sustainable consumption is becoming another significant driver behind the rising interest in natural pet food. The report indicates that pet owners pay close attention to responsible ingredient sourcing, recyclable packaging, and reduced carbon footprint. At the same time, interest is growing in alternative protein sources such as insect, plant-based, and cultivated proteins. These ingredients are viewed as a way to reduce environmental impact while maintaining nutritional value.

Product differentiation in the natural pet food segment is increasing. Manufacturers are actively adopting ingredients positioned as functional superfoods, including chia seeds, turmeric, blueberries, and kale. Technologies such as freeze-drying and air-drying are also gaining traction, allowing producers to preserve flavour and nutritional properties without relying on artificial preservatives. The report highlights rising interest in diets based on black soldier fly larvae, valued for their digestibility and environmental sustainability. Attention is also growing toward functional ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, and omega-rich oils that support digestion and skin condition.

At the same time, the segment faces notable constraints. Natural ingredients and sustainable packaging increase production costs, making such products less accessible for budget-conscious consumers. There is also an ongoing need for a transparent labelling system: the term “natural” is interpreted differently across regions, which creates challenges for labelling regulations, communication, and product claims verification. Research Intelo notes that further growth will depend on manufacturers’ ability to ensure ingredient traceability and adapt to evolving regulatory requirements.
